Engineering Manager

  • Responsible for the development of the long term engineering strategy for the plant and the successful planning and implementation of major engineering projects as part of a major programme of repairs, refurbishment and improvements.
  • In addition the role requires knowledge of contract and procurement strategies, modern staff recruitment policies.
  • The job requires a detailed technical understanding of Combined Cycle or Open Cycle power plants with practical experience of a modern Gas Turbines and associated Balance of Plant equipment.
  • Demineralized Water production plant experience is an advantage.
  • At least 10 years experience in the maintenance of a large power plants.
  • An accredited Engineering degree.
  • Registration as Professional Engineer with Engineering Institute.
  • Demonstrated competence at engineering level supported by relevant education and training.
  • Project management.
  • Contractual knowledge.
  • Knowledge and experience of Gas Turbine maintenance schedule, v94.2 Siemens or Ansaldo units preferred.
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act.
  • Use of safe systems of work.
  • Use of computerized management system.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Engineering concepts and principles.
  • Interaction with purchasing, finance, accounting, maintenance departments.
  • Budget control and reporting.
  • A committed team player with demonstrable leadership qualities, technical expertise, IT, communication skills, financial and commercial skills and general management excellence will be required in equal measure.
  • Ability to openly share and transfer skills and knowledge to the teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The Engineering Manager is responsible for the lifetime management and integrity of the major capital items of plant and apparatus such as Gas Turbines, Generators, Transformers, pressure and electrical distribution systems, peripheral plant including pumps, pipework and tanks, control systems and also structural and civil assets.
  • The Engineering Manager will be required to develop and implement procedures which allow compliance with guidance on Engineering, taking into account manufacturers recommendations and good engineering practice.
  • Ensure that the plant meets safety, availability, reliability, efficiency, generation and budget targets.
  • Develop a comprehensive quality assurance program.
  • Day to day management of the engineering team in the head office.
  • Support the two plants with engineering guidance.
  • Development and implementation of the long term maintenance strategy for the plant and the development of capable staff to support that strategy.
  • The Engineering Manager is responsible for the technical management of the Long Term Maintenance Agreement for the power block.
  • Proactively identify and deliver improvement projects.
  • Ensures reporting as per contractual and business requirements.
  • Responsible for the technical QA/QC and with the support of site inputs the root cause analysis program.
  • Development, achievement and reporting of KPIs and objectives in line with the business plan.
  • Efficient management of resources, supplies and consumables while controlling the risks to the business.
  • Establish, implement and monitor a detailed plant thermal efficiency monitoring.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with any HR, administration, operation, finance, and Health, Safety and Environment departments.
  • Establish and facilitate training programs for individual development and competence within the departments.
  • Organize performance evaluation and succession planning for key staff in the engineering department.
  • Preparation for outages in terms of securing the necessary budgetary funding approval, procurement of spares, manpower, technical expertise and preparation of technical specifications to allow completion of the tendering process.
  • Develops long term outage plans and manages annual outages to achieve outcomes safely, on time and to budget with the desired objectives.
  • Ensures lessons learnt are recorded, incorporated into future plans and that a full record of as found and final status is maintained.
  • Liaise with the all department to determine any plant improvements for operability, safety, environmental impact and commercial flexibility.
  • Engineering proposals and modifications represent value for money commensurate with the assessed risk.
  • The Engineering Manager will work in a controlled hazardous environment.

    Work Level 5 (OSHA scale 1 to 6 Exposure to Risks:
    • Traffic risks, ergonomic risks
    • Risks inherent to the job of the Engineering Manager while performing inspections, site visits, etc.
    Personal Protective Equipment:
      Recommended HPE (Health Protection Equipment): Ergonomic office equipment.
      • Operates within the approved budgetary limits and assigned authorities.
      • Approves expenses and leave incurred by team members in the course of performing their duties in accordance with the established policies.
      POSITION: Permanent.
